The love for Hello Kitty (and other Sanrio characters) in Hong Kong is strong, has always been strong and likely will continue to keep going strong! I share the love for Hello Kitty and I just really enjoy how Hong Kong completely embraces the cuteness. ;)
You would think Hong Kong already has a variety of Hello Kitty themed businesses, with a cafe, dim sum restaurant and organic farm, but why not a supermarket too? ;) I checked it out a week ago and I completely love it! Apparently, it’s the world’s first Hello Kitty themed supermarket and arguably the world’s cutest one too!
The only downside is that this cute theming is a pop-up by the YATA supermarket chain, so the Hello Kitty theme will end on 31 May 2017. Definitely check it out while you can!
The supermarket is brand new, covers two floors and from my visit, I’d say that the Hello Kitty theme covers 75% of the supermarket. I think YATA did a great job incorporating the theme, but it’s not entirely Hello Kitty-fied, which is totally fine by me.
I also wanted to add that there are a few stands selling Hello Kitty desserts outside of the supermarket, to go along with the theme and one of them is the yummy baby Mon Cher cakes from Japan, which I love!
Beyond the Hello Kitty theme, because it is a supermarket after all, I wanted to point out that this YATA outlet also stocks quite a wide selection of Japanese food and products and shopping here is a little pricier than the average Wellcome or ParknShop. My sister did point out that the quality of food sold was much better though, so there’s that.
The YATA & Hello Kitty pop-up is very fun and it’s so cute that they managed to turn grocery shopping into an experience, it’s awesome! The pop-up supermarket is located in the Western end of Hong Kong Island in Sai Wan and I’ve included the address and other details at the end of this post.
Have fun shopping, I hope you like it as much as I do!
